As a first-of-its-kind in Toronto, Michael Garron Hospital’s Chest Centre brings together, under one area, expertise in respirology, thoracic surgery, and other specialties required to diagnose, treat and manage illnesses of the chest and lungs.
Our goal is to improve quality of care for patients, enabling them to access and receive treatment quickly and effectively. The Chest Centre provides individuals and their families with the tools, skills and confidence needed to manage their lung condition and promote healthy breathing.
Our inter-professional team includes respiratory therapists, nurse practitioner, sleep technologists, administrative staff and respirologists.
Chest Centre Outpatient Services
A physician referral is required for the following services.
- Cardiopulmonary Testing: This test looks at how well the heart and lungs are working together during exercise.
- Pulmonary Function Testing (PFTs): This test is done to evaluate how much air your lungs can hold, how quickly you can move air in and out of your lungs, and how well your lungs add oxygen to the blood and remove carbon dioxide from the blood. Testing is done by a registered respiratory therapist.
- Sleep studies: A sleep study involves an overnight stay in the clinic, where devices are attached to the patient to record sleeping patterns, breathing, oxygen levels and monitor the heart - these help to detect problems during sleep.
- Smoking Cessation Clinic: One on one pre booked appointments with a smoking cessation councilor to support patient quitting goals
