Michael Garron Hospital's (MGH) COVID-19 Assessment Centre provides screening, assessment and testing for individuals four months of age or older in East Toronto by appointment. It is located on the north side of the Hospital building off of Mortimer Avenue, west of the Emergency Department (see map below). Test results should be available online within 24 to 72 hours.

Our Paediatric ED COVID-19 Assessment Zone provides testing and expedited paediatric ED assessments for symptomatic children and families by appointment and walk-in. (Children must be at least four months old and under 18 years of age.) Individuals who need more than one appointment (e.g. for additional family members) may book one appointment and bring up to four family members to be tested at the same time if they meet the province's testing criteria(Family members do not need to be registered online individually.) Individuals who walk in may also bring up to four family members to be tested at the same time if they meet the province’s testing criteria. Please note appointments are prioritized. Wait times for walk-ins may vary depending on volumes.

Children who visit both MGH's COVID-19 Assessment Centre and the Paediatric ED COVID-19 Assessment Zone receive an oral-nasal test. The oral-nasal test involves rubbing the inside of the mouth and the front of the nose with a swab for less than five seconds. It is less invasive than the nasopharyngeal (NP) swab that is commonly used for COVID-19 tests. This helps increase the likelihood that children and youth will have pleasant testing experiences. The oral-nasal test is a laboratory-validated polymerase chain reaction (PCR) test, not a rapid antigen test. This means a second test is not needed to confirm a positive result. Test results should be available online within 24 to 72 hours.

The entrance for the Paediatric ED COVID-19 Assessment Zone is located off of Mortimer Avenue to the immediate right of the Emergency Department entrance. It is separate from the MGH COVID-19 Assessment Centre (see map below).

If there are no appointments available for MGH's COVID-19 Assessment Centre and the Paediatric ED COVID-19 Assessment Zone, you may visit one of our COVID-19 Outreach Centres. Our COVID-19 Outreach Centres offer child-friendly testing, assessments, vaccinations and other supports by walk-in. Children who visit our COVID-19 Outreach Centres receive an oral-nasal test.

Please ensure you follow public health safety measures while waiting for your COVID-19 test, including physical distancing and wearing a mask.

TESTING ELIGIBLITY

Based on the Ontario government’s current COVID-19 testing guidelines, we provide COVID-19 testing for individuals who are:

  • Showing COVID-19 symptoms;
  • Have been exposed to a confirmed case of the virus (e.g. personal exposure or an exposure that is identified through the COVID Alert app, by your public health unit or by an MGH infection control practitioner);
  • A resident or worker in a setting that has a COVID-19 outbreak; and/or
  • Otherwise eligible for testing as per the Province of Ontario.

Appointments can be booked for our COVID-19 Assessment Centre and Paediatric ED COVID-19 Assessment Zone using our online booking tool.

Reminder about testing after exposure: If you have been exposed to someone who has a confirmed case of COVID-19, you must self-isolate for a total of 10 days after exposure. Testing is recommended between the fifth and eighth day after exposure. For information about self-isolation, please follow these public health guidelines.

TESTING ACCESSIBILITY

We offer a small number of same-day walk-in appointments (low-barrier appointments) at our COVID-19 Assessment Centre for those who do not have internet or phone access and are unable to book an appointment (e.g. any individuals currently experiencing homelessness or who are living in a shelter, etc.).

Our Paediatric ED COVID-19 Assessment Zone is by appointment only. Please note, due to large testing volumes, appointment times are approximate and wait times may vary.

About the Test

The test is similar to that of other respiratory illnesses and involves taking a sample from the nasal cavity with a swab. This test is not an antibody test.

Children who visit MGH's Paediatric ED COVID-19 Assessment Zone receive an oral-nasal test.

MGH's Infection Prevention and Control Team and Toronto Public Health will follow up with those who test positive for COVID-19. Access your COVID-19 test results online. Results should be available within 24 to 72 hours.

It is important to remember that testing represents a snapshot in time. Therefore, it is critical that you continue to follow public health guidelines including: washing your hands, physically distancing by at least six feet from people you do not live with, wearing a mask and avoiding shared surfaces.
